Niagara Escarpment, New York
The Niagara Escarpment is one of the fastest-growing wine regions in New York State, considered warmer and drier than many of the state's other grape-growing areas. Among the newest arrivals on the Niagara wine scene is Liten Buffel Winery, located in Middleport, in Niagara County. Liten Buffel, which means "little buffalo" in Swedish, is the collaborative effort of Zach Klug and his partner Patrick Vaughn.Their focus is on terroir driven wines that showcase Niagara’s sense of place. They use sustainably grown grapes, allow fermentation to begin naturally, forgo filtration, and use exclusively neutral oak in order to protect the terroir.
Their 2015 Riesling Cuvée reveals notes of pears, honeycomb and ginger all with an underlying acidity and creaminess that tantalizes the palate. We are truly intrigued by this delightful natural wine which can be sipped with friends and a spread of soft cheese and spicy charcuterie.
