TASTING NOTES
These vines are part of the original planting by Charlotte Young in 1971. The 2024 vintage marks these vine’s 53st harvest - pretty amazing. This wine comes from the far western side of the property, the edge, or the “peripherie”. While the majority of the old vines in the vineyard have typical length 3ft shoots, and moderately sized clusters, the “peripherie” row may have up to 10ft long canes sprawling onto the floor and often football sized clusters. I felt there could be a more intentional use than blending this anomaly section of higher vigor vines into the block designate wines. So, as an ode to the traditional way of harvesting and in an effort to make a fresh wine out of a serious vineyard, I made a co-fermented field blend. In some ways, it is the truest representation of the site, as it speaks to all the original blocks. It is a special wine, and it holds a special place in our hearts!
You can seek out glimpses of all three varieties in this wine. Delicate yet fairly formal. Light, alive, easy, crushable - but crushable in a fancy way. Like you’re about to have the best night of your life tearing it up on the dance floor at your best friend's wedding. -Winemaker's Notes
95pts - Vinous
"The 2024 Périphérie Estate Ibarra-Young Vineyard is a compelling co-ferment of 45% Marsanne, 40% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, made in an infusion-like style with fully destemmed fruit. Finessed and so polished, it boasts attractive layers of hibiscus, rooibos tea, exotic spice, rose petal and salted raspberry. The texture here is supremely refined, and the finish is long, complex and finely chiseled. I haven't tasted anything else like this. Fabulous."
