Côte du Rhône, Rhône Valley, France
70% Grenache & 30% Syrah
Vive la France, Vive la Resistance! It is not known exactly when the Rhône got started as a wine region; it is most likely to have been in the 3rd or 4th century B.C. There is some speculation that Syrah originated in the region, but ampelographers (analysts of grapes) seem to concur that no grapes at all originated in the Rhône. Either way, pour a glass and enjoy this French rebel. The bouquet definitely shows raspberry, cedar and dust; while on the tongue, violets, thyme, and wild cherry expose soft tannins. Pair this with blue cheese stuffed mushrooms, braised chuck tacos or Shanghai style spicy pork.
