Valdeorras, Galicia, Spain
Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s pioneer winemakers, advocating native grape varietals tied to the climates and conditions of their sites, and making world-class wines from undiscovered as well as known regions. He considers this region of Galicea very magical but also admits the vineyards are stubborn and difficult. Influenced by the Atlantic ocean and contintenal climate, this Galacian red has an expressive floral and perfumed nose of luscious red fruit. It is highlighted by flavors of robust cherry and strawberry fruit, forest floor, dried Italian spices and a persistent finish. Mencia is a remarkable food wine and will go nicely with pastrami or corned beef sandwiches, or cheeses such as Petit Basque, Manchego or white cheddar.
